Saira’s 40th was the second kind — a milestone celebration at Discovery Church in Wexford, PA, designed like an editorial spread, with every detail staged to be photographed. And then the night got its headline act: a live performance by Manj Musik himself.

The ruby year

When Saira and I first talked about the design, I asked her what she wanted. Her answer was every designer’s dream: you take full rein — do what you think is good.

So I started with tradition. Your 40th birthday is your ruby year — the red year. Why fight that? Why not embrace it completely? Red became the soul of the room: rich, romantic, unapologetic. I planned the full palette and how every element would come together — layering in a modern, trendy edge so it felt current, not costume. Curated balloon installations gave the space its wow factor, and the centerpieces were designed on a clean red slate — an ode to her forty years — personal, intentional, unmistakably hers.

That’s the thing about full creative trust: it lets the design become a portrait of the person, not just a pretty room.

The headliner

For those who don’t know the name: Manjeet Singh Ral, better known as Manj Musik, is British-Indian music royalty. As the former frontman of the iconic bhangra-fusion group RDB (Rhythm Dhol Bass), he helped take Punjabi music global in the early 2000s — blending bhangra with hip-hop and urban sounds long before it was fashionable. Since going solo in 2014 under his own label Muzik ONE, he’s delivered anthems like “Swag Mera Desi” with Raftaar, “Whistle Baja,” and “Laal Ghaghra,” composed for Bollywood films including Heropanti, Singh Is Bling, and Gabbar Is Back, and collaborated with artists from Snoop Dogg to Badshah. Six million Instagram followers. Sold-out stages worldwide. And on this night — Saira’s stage.
